Meet Chuhk Bennett, Concept Director at Madhappy and long time friend of The New Bar. Chuhk finds romance in the ritual of pouring a glass of wine at the end of the day, and chooses to do so with intention by honoring his sobriety. From sharing a nonalc beverage with his parents to enjoying a glass of Sovi Reserve Red by candlelight at home, Chuhk finds the best version of himself by skipping the alcohol and indulging in all that life has to offer.
When did you first come to TNB & try nonalc beverages?
The first time I met Brianda and was introduced to The New Bar was on the opening night of their Venice location. I went to support Allie and my friend Brett, who helped with the build out of the store.
Brianda and I hit it off immediately and it has been amazing to watch the community grow so rapidly in such a short time.
How do nonalc beverages play a role in your life?
As I am still transitioning into a newly sober lifestyle, The New Bar has been a great place for me to go grab a non-alcoholic beverage when I know I am going to a nice dinner, social event, or even just feel like spoiling myself. I usually grab a bottle of wine and a few De Soi's or Ghia's just so I have something to look forward to when I open the fridge.Β
When do you most enjoy sharing a beverage with someone?
Funny enough, my parents both met getting sober in the program, so there has always been a somewhat unique assortment of beverages in our fridge at home. My dad has taken a liking to a few of the non-alcoholic beverages at TNB and it's always fun to get his thoughts on whatever my sister and I bring over for him to try.
What do you look for when youβre picking a drink? What captures your interest?
I'm a no fluff kind of guy when it comes to picking my beverages and usually lean towards something simple that pairs well with a steak or a cigarette. I still often miss being able to share a bottle of wine with a friend or partner, and having a glass in any capacity is a romantic experience I cannot live without.
Can you tell us a bit about the photos youβve captured and shared with us?
I am much more comfortable behind the camera than I am in front of it! Of the hundreds of shoots I have done, the few where I have been asked to be the subject are the most challenging lol. I guess I tried to showcase myself in my home because that is where I spend most of my time. I love my apartment, and if I am going to have a glass of wine it is almost certainly by candlelight at my dining room table.
What do you drink when you go out?Β
It is nice to see non-alc options at more bars and restaurants around town! A cheat night for me most of the time means a Diet coke, but if I am feeling adventurous I will get a nonalc negroni or cocktail.Β
How has The New Bar & the nonalc category impacted you?
In making the choice to live a sober life, I found it extremely difficult (and still do) to navigate what to do with myself. Everything changes. It is a uniquely terrifying experience but the reward is an understanding of gratitude that I had yet to discover.Β
Every decision I make is a non alc decision, and I am a better person because of it. Being able to indulge in a beverage simply because I enjoy it is a gift and one I no longer take for granted.Β I am grateful for The New Bar and anyone else making an attempt to help those looking to make sobriety, or even just a night off, an easier decision.
